What Is VoIP? A Plain-English Introduction

A beginner-friendly explanation of Voice over IP and why businesses are moving away from traditional phone lines.

The basic idea

VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. Instead of sending calls over dedicated copper phone lines, VoIP carries voice as data over the same internet connection your business already uses.

Because calls travel as data, features that used to require expensive equipment — call routing, voicemail-to-email, and multi-site extensions — become software settings.

Why businesses switch

Organizations typically move to VoIP for a few recurring reasons:

  • Lower and more predictable costs than maintaining separate phone lines and on-site hardware.
  • Features such as auto-attendants and forwarding built in rather than added on.
  • Flexibility to support remote staff and new locations without new wiring.

What you need

A reliable internet connection, compatible phones or softphones, and a plan for moving your existing numbers. Most of the work is in the planning, not the technology itself.
